In terms of player base alone, Roblox beats Minecraft by about 20 million. At the time of writing, Roblox has around 60 million active players while Minecraft has around 40 million.
Both figures are absolutely insane, but Roblox is currently leaving Minecraft in the digital dust. But having a higher player count doesn't translate to a game being better than another.
There are a number of factors that go into what makes a game great. Here are my attributes that define a great game and where both Minecraft and Roblox land with them.
Replayability - I don't want to spend 60 dollars or more on a game, beat the main storyline, and never look at it again. Truly great games have awesome post-game activities.
Customization - If games don't allow you to make them your own, things can get boring quickly. Fortunately, many modern games allow for a very granular level of customization.
Intuitive Mechanics - I love a good challenge as much as the next gamer, but when mechanics are hard to get used to things take a dark turn from difficult to annoying.
Community - Developers and studios make games but communities raise them and keep them relevant.
Now that we know how I judge games let's dive into how Roblox and Minecraft stack up.
Overall, Roblox has better replayability than Minecraft and here's why. Roblox allows players to easily build unique games, so if you finish the main story on one game, then you can easily jump over to another and start all over.
Minecraft does allow players to host their own servers and have their own PvP gaming mechanics, but not to the extent Roblox does. Creators are more limited in mods, and the barriers to entry are much steeper in Mojangland.
Since developer creativity basically has no technical boundaries thousands of games are available on the Roblox platform, further bolstering the game's replayability.
Roblox allows for more customization than Minecraft. Ease of development and deployment of games makes Roblox one of the easiest places to build a new game.
However, for non-developers, Minecraft customizations are much easier to get you aren't locked behind a paywall. In Roblox, you're going to have to bust out some serious Robux to customize your avatar and really anything else.
Minecraft with its Microsoft backing and native PC roots as a Desktop application have better controller, keyboard, and mouse support. The mechanics themselves are also very intuitive with many other games adopting similar crafting mechanics.
Roblox's endless customization has a drawback in that the mechanics can be all over the place and frustrating at times. So, Minecraft wins the day for mechanics.
This is a tough one since both communities are huge and largely positive. But, when it comes to communities, Roblox has the edge.
The main reason is the sheer size difference. More players generally equate to more resources, guides, calculators, Youtube channels, and many other things.
Roblox has been very consistent in its goal of delivering awesome, diverse games reliably to its players over the years. Minecraft is also wonderful and has the edge when it comes to spinoff titles. Minecraft Dungeons, Legends, and even appearances in Super Smash Brothers underscore how far Minecraft mania reaches.
Although both games are popular with similar graphics, they are largely different platforms. It's difficult to do an apples to apples comparison between the two but in the areas where there is overlap, Roblox is the clear winner.
