The Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex are two of the biggest, baddest predators that have ever walked the face of the planet. Both of these non-vegans can rip most other giant lizards to shreds, but what would happen if the two ever squared off on the battlefield?

We'll examine this and more in the article below. But, a little context before we move on. The Spinosaurus and T-Rex in the battle simulator will be historically accurate. I won't draw on Jurassic Park or any other piece of fantasy media for stats, behavior, or size.

With that out of the way, let's dive into this super fun prehistoric battle between two of the most terrifying creatures God ever created.

Who is bigger, the Spinosaurus or T-Rex?

When it comes to overall size, the T-Rex, while likely more muscular and girthy, is smaller than the Spinosaurus. The latter is longer but much less bulky. Essentially, it's Jon Jones vs. Mike Tyson. Here is a chart comparing the two.

Dinosaur Length (meters) Weight (tons)
Spinosaurus 15-18 7-20
Tyrannosaurus rex 12-13 8-14

Who is more aggressive, the Spinosaurus or T-Rex?

Aggression or gameness plays a large role in deciding a victor in physical confrontation. Since both animals lived so long ago and have never been observed by humans, we can't say with certainty how either animal behaved.

Big teeth don't always equate to high levels of aggression in animals. And, by all accounts, it seems that the T-Rex was the more aggressive dino. There are marks on the skulls of T-Rexes that appear to have been inflicted by other Rexes.

This would indicate territorial disputes or even predation. This one may be controversial, but in real life, I say the T-Rex is much more aggressive than the Spino.

Who is stronger, the Spino or T-Rex?

We can correlate size to strength in many scenarios. And though the T-Rex is bulkier, the Spinosaurus carries more muscle mass, so logic would dictate that it's stronger than good ol' Rexy. Also, given the comically small arms of the Rex, I have a hard time believing it would pose a threat to a similarly sized animal with proportional limbs.

The limbs did provide some utility to the beast, however. Believe it or not, they possessed decent muscle mass, and it's thought they could hold down prey with them.

Who is faster, the Spino or T-Rex?

When it comes to speed, Rexy's build allows it to move at much faster speeds. Its legs are huge and muscular, enabling powerful quick bursts of speed. Similar to an Olympic sprinter or a fullback in American Football.

The Spino, by contrast, has a more elongated, hydrodynamic body, like Michael Phelps. This helps it maneuver in the water, but its longer build doesn't allow for as much speed. The top speed of the Spinosaurus is estimated around 15 miles per hour, while the T-Rex is thought to have run about 25 miles per hour.

It is debated whether the Spino was bipedal or quadrupedal. If the latter is true, the Spino could theoretically move a little faster if it had four points of contact with the ground. Now, would this be enough to close the speed gap with Rexy? Maybe!

Would a Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus ever fight?

The T-Rex lived in the plains and forests of present-day North America. The Spino roamed a considerable distance away in coastal areas of Africa. So, short of a crazy, power-hungry scientist placing them in a theme park, the two would probably never meet. Thus, a fight between the two likely would not occur. But...if a fight did occur, here is how it would play out!

T-Rex vs Spinosaurus - The Battle

Aspect Details
Scenario The male T-Rex is hunting the female Spino's baby - I know it's cliché, but it's the most likely scenario.
Location River delta or coastal floodplain
Number of Combatants 2
Genders Spinosaurus (Female); T-Rex (Male)
Motivation Hunger for Rexy and maternal instinct for the Spino
Spinosaurus Height and Weight 5.7 meters tall (sail included), 15-18 meters long, 7-20 tons
T-Rex Height and Weight 4 meters tall (at the hips), 12-13 meters long, 8-14 tons
Spinosaurus Strongest Weapon Powerful claws and jaws
T-Rex Strongest Weapon Massive bite force

The battle between these two legendary monsters would most likely take place in either a river delta or a coastal flood plain. This scenario is the most likely as both areas encompass topography favorable to both animals. There is enough water for the Spino and enough land for the T-Rex.

As the sun rises over the vast floodplain, a dense fog lingers above the water, creating an eerie and tense atmosphere. The Spinosaurus emerges from the mist, its elongated snout sniffing the air. It senses the presence of another predator and immediately becomes alert. The river delta, with its murky waters and lush vegetation, provides the perfect backdrop for this meeting of giants. The Spino, with its massive sail and powerful claws, is at home in this aquatic environment, ready to assert its dominance.

On the other side of the floodplain, the ground trembles as the T-Rex strides forward. The king of the Cretaceous, with its mighty jaws and immense size, is no stranger to confrontation. Its sharp eyes lock onto the Spinosaurus across the water. With a deep, resonant roar, the T-Rex announces its presence, challenging the Spino. The open terrain and scattered trees offer it the space to maneuver and charge if needed.

The two giants approach each other cautiously, the water lapping at the Spino's feet while the T-Rex stands firm on dry land. For a moment, they size each other up, assessing strengths and weaknesses. The Spinosaurus arches its back, displaying its impressive sail, a sign of strength and size. The T-Rex, unfazed, lowers its massive head, jaws slightly open, revealing rows of sharp teeth.

Tension breaks as the Spinosaurus makes the first move, swiping its powerful claws at the T-Rex. The T-Rex reacts swiftly, dodging the attack and snapping its jaws in retaliation. A brief scuffle ensues, with the Spinosaurus using its long reach and the T-Rex relying on its muscular build and powerful bite. The clash sends ripples through the water and shakes the ground, a testament to their immense strength.

The Spinosaurus, leveraging its agility in the shallow water, manages to knock the T-Rex off balance with a forceful tail swipe. The T-Rex stumbles but quickly regains its footing, roaring defiantly. It lunges forward, attempting to land a decisive bite, but the Spinosaurus deftly sidesteps, avoiding a serious confrontation.

Realizing the challenge, the T-Rex decides to reassess. With a cautious retreat, it backs away, eyes still locked on the Spino. The Spinosaurus, standing tall, lets out a victorious roar, a clear declaration of dominance. The T-Rex, acknowledging the Spino's control over the watery territory, slowly turns and disappears into the forest.

The Spinosaurus watches until the T-Rex is out of sight, then returns to the water, confident and unchallenged. The fog lifts, revealing the Spinosaurus as the ruler of this domain. In this encounter, the Spino's aquatic agility and powerful claws proved superior, leaving it victorious in this prehistoric showdown.

Rexy lost the battle, but she wins our hearts

Though the T-Rex could not best the Spino in battle today, she's still in my top three favorite dinos. She's the mascot of the most famous dino-themed franchise around and has inspired people like me to create all sorts of fun and engaging content.
